just wondering if anyone saw any upsets that might shake up the open seedings? I also like to name freshman who win titles as in my mind it definitely stands out. A few at the top of my mind are
1-Mairano over Shibazz 126 L (good win for a freshman)
2-Bergin over Sibbett 160 L(another good win for a freshman)
3-Charon over Brault 106 M(not a upset per se but shakes up the bracket)
4-Johnson 1st place 120 LL (tight race here but shakes it up as well)
5-Agoev over Tsiranides 160LL ( this kid is fun to watch)
6-Carr over Seaton 170 LL(3 seed winning)
7-Harrington winning 220 LL(2 seed winning)
8- Longo 106 LL ( 2 seed winning as a freshman)
9-Dube 195 L (3 seed winning)
10- Charon over Smith 113 class M( shakes up seeding )
11- now I don’t know much about this match but it looked interesting so maybe someone can shine some light on to it. Toland-Matos 132 class M 7 seed winning? Was there something wrong at time of seeding? Was he injured this year and just got a bad seeding? A 7 seed winning the class is always interesting and should absolutely make the open seeding interesting.
any others and or comments on above that you guys saw as I’m sure I missed a few.
One big notice for me was Rich Morrell (160) from New Milford, 15th seed finishing 4th and was a millimeter from being in the finals. He wrestled a great tournament.
I agree with m113 , and the LL 120 class yesterday was some great matches. Sam,Cole,Jack,Martial, and Tyler all battled hard and had some close matches Right up to the finals And consis!
I thought Shaughnessy's result was a good jump up for him. Sammy White trying to go out strong...closed the gap on Johnson yesterday. Toland Matos was a state placewinner at 145 last year, wrestled a tough schedule. Class M 113 will bust the Open bracket. I think 160 will be fascinating. Freshman Bergin, sophomore Tsirinades, senior Angers.....young guns vs veteran gunslinger. There are 8 guys at 120 I could picture going to New Englands. Grats to Richie Morrell on a really strong finish to a career. Won his conference title at SWC's and a strong 4th at L's. New Englands may prove to be the true judge of the 126 weight class this year. Shamar Schand vs Justin Mastroianni in Opens? Schand taking a step up and Mastroianni having a tough year with injuries?
I think that any time a 4 beats a 1 in the semi's, it's at least a mild upset. Cole Shaughnessey and Sam White beat Tim Roberts and Jack Ryan and then lost close 1 point matches in the finals. 195 in Ls was crazy with Salinas beating Bartholomay in the quarters (and 5 seed Babenkov getting to the finals beating the 1 seed Toth). 15 seed Morrell getting to the SEMIFINALS be beating the 5 and 6 seeds (and then only losing by a point to Sibbett!) was a great job by him.
Toland-Matos wrestled better competition during the year(lost to Fields and Nichols by a point and twice to Parrot) and ended up with a bad seed plus he was hurt for part of season so that hurt the seed. He was ranked #1 on the forum here so not really a surprise he won.
