This is still very interesting. Both Ebert and Weiner in the quarters at NE. Ebert with a very winnable match and Weiner with the ME1, which I think he can win as well.
This thread has kept the wrestling fun to be at home for hear youngsters - I called it ealierkier in the thread... I think jack sees ebert in the finals, it could very well happen
Right now it seems like Ebert is the favorite heading into New England’s. Apparently broke the freshman record for most wins in a season for Warde set by Tim Kane. Taking 3rd at a weight featuring the #4 ranked 126lber in the country is also giving him some points imo. Poll will be up after New England’s
I still believe Matt Weiner should be Freshman of the Year after finishing 5th at Opens at 285. It is much rarer to see a Freshman heavy place so high than it is to see a Freshman excel at the lower weights. With that being said, Eibert and Mairano having placed 3rd and 4th respectively behind R. Jack and Folino is extremely impressive, but since it is in a weight class where freshmen more frequently populate the top rankings it is not as impressive to me as are Matt Weiner’s accomplishments. Maybe this debate will be decided after the New England tourney. Good luck to all CT wrestlers.
Mairano and ebert were so fun to watch at opens - each winning a close match against each other. They both should be contenders at New Englands. Mairano gave Folino an outstanding 8-7 semi finals match! the future is exciting for both of these kids.
I want to mention Jamikael Lytle for freshman. 2nd in S at 195 loing a 1 pt match to Falco in a back and forth match with some dubious calls. 5th at Open. Worth consideration.
Bergin defaulted out of the tournament. Team decision is what I heard. Kane would be a solid choice...it's just tough to compare the one outlier to guys who competed against each other all year head to head.
I don't think anything was decided at Opens other than Bergin took himself out of the equation. O'Dell would be a tough sell at this point. Maraino and Ebert seem the most likely to do something at New Englands.
Still tough to call imo, I like Eibert! Mairano looked good also. What happened to bergin? Can’t found O’dell out either just a tough road ahead. Can’t not give Kane solid recognition for winning even a few matches at nationals.
I couldn’t agree more! I’ve been watching him for the last few years as a youth wrestler. Those Kane’s have a strong pedigree for wrestling in their family.
So as of right now I would say there are 4 in the mix after Class championships. Mairano(126 class L title),Bergin(class L 160 title) ,and Longo (class LL 106 title. ), O’Dell (106 class LL 2nd place),Peter Kane GFA (132 prep New England champ.)
Bergin is still the guy who has faced upperclassmen all year and displayed the technique, ability and results to be the favorite. He didn't wrestle this past weekend either. Would compare him to Tsirinades last year, who without Mastroianni in the mix might have won.
hey everyone, I'm getting this topic going again. A few of those mentioned freshman had good weekends.
Weiner: 2nd SCC
O'dell: 1st FCIAC
Longo: 2nd FCIAC
Ebert: 3rd FCIAC
Mairano : Did not compete in conference weekend
Class tournament is another layer that will continue to weed out a winner here. i think Weiner has a legit shot of pushing thought to LL finals, i think he can wrestle with Agosto and pull out a win.
Longo/O'dell can make a run for a title and i think will see each other in the finals. Mairano at 26 in the L should be a champ, I'm very Surprised to see the level of competition at L 126 to be honest. not one wrestler in the bracket is a returning class placer, Only 10 seeding points were needed to land the 1 seed.
Ebert drew the 5 seed so he will see Jack in the Semi's, sure to knock him into the wrestle backs there.
I am willing to hold off the award until after New England's as it is pretty close. Another one up for discussion is wrestler of the year, I was planning on giving it to Calo but unfortunately he's out. The other guy was Jack. What do you guys think? I'll probably wait out on this award too this year and most likely have a poll up with the nominees.
Welp boys. Looks like Ebert is taking home the crown
fciac 3
LL 3
Open 3
New England 3/4
O’dell close second
fciac 1
LL 2
Open 5
New England 5/6
O’dell into the placement rounds!
Ebert into the placement round!
weiner needs a win to place !
this is getting fun!

How did Kane finish at prep nationals?
Tough call on this! I have to say Eibert is my favorite but Odell looked good and you can’t count him out.
looks like this may need to be settled at New England!
Linder /O’dell wrestling for a chance to go rob NE
Mariano/Ebert battle for 3rd at opens and the winner is my favo to win this award right now ...
weiner still has a shot to qualify for NE

He is a pleasure to watch wrestle, amazing kid
Peter Kane of GFA won the prep states and New Englands @132 , there is more wrestling in CT then I see written about. Freshman
