Agreed about 106, I still feel 120 and 138 were deeper, but 106 should have been a part of the conversation. 120 from a regional perspective was a pretty clear challenge. Oddity of 120 was three CT wrestlers were competing for one spot into the medal matches through the same bracket. Unfortunate.
106 had 3 CT boys on the podium also, a few weights had 2 but not many had 3. Doesn’t have anything to do with FOTYA but just responding to the comment that 120 & 138 being the deepest classes.
yea i agree as well. 138 had 3 on the podium at NE and 120 had 2. Both weights were stacked this weekend. Iammuno lost in quaters and that made it for a tougher path to place. Bourjelli making a run to the semis was huge for him.
Oh crap....I was thinking of Jack at 132. Dunno why unless it was because last I saw him wrestle was at Eastern States. If Bourjelli is in the finals then that would be dead nuts comparable to Iammuno winning.
Agree with everything you said, with the exception of both on the list to win Opens. Iammuno clearly has a shot since he beat Currier. Bourjelli has no shot except if Jack decides to skip opens. If the seeding come out in his favor he can make the finals, but don't seeing him upsetting Jack. It takes nothing away from his phenomenal season.
Good point. RJ and Licastri both 4x class winners, both defending NE champs with Licastri winning Eastern States. I think that award is more deserving of being split than FOTY. Would be a shame that the only reason Licastri isn't recognized is because he's the same age as Ryan Jack. I think Licastri actually has the better claim this year if you have to go with one.
I lean toward Iamunno for FOTY, but both he and Bourjelli have faced the best wrestlers in their classes and won. I see Gilchrist as a half step behind. Ware looked good, but has faced a lower level of opponents, and Maddox is kind of in the same boat.
Bottom line is Iammuno and Bourjelli are both on the list of favorites to win Opens in their weight classes....the others are not. They all are likely qualifiers for New Englands.
I would like to nominate Tyler Sung (New Canaan) for WOTY with his comeback from knee surgery and the passing of his mother shows not only overcoming physical issues but emotional hurdles to conquer. Such a individual truly must have a heart of a true champion, steel fortitude and a undying will to to fight on not only on the mat but in all things in life. With that being said Sung is the clear choice.
I couldn't agree more! I second the vote for Sung for all he has overcome. He is an exceptional young man who has really proven to be a stand out in all aspects of his life , not just wrestling.
Iammuno looked phenomenal. However, so did Bourjelli and I was really impressed in his semi/final matchup. Think i may have to give co-freshman of the year awards this time.
As everyone knows? Dude go chew the corn fat boy! stop being a chubby chaser ! Get out from under Weiners nuts and come to your senses. There’s other smells out there than fromunda scent!
Ware wrestled nobody and when he did he got beat. Iamunno beat #1 both upperclassmen @ 120. I don’t care what you say, he’s absolutely the best freshman in the state. Khalil isn’t too far behind but can’t argue with Iammunos success, and record. I won’t argue with Gilchrist , he looks good, but not at the level of Iamunno.
They next couple weeks will help tell the story but FOTY - Ware from Killingly is 40-1 at 106. Maddox from Fitch has looked fantastic and Gilchrist from Norwalk has had a fantastic season at 182. As everyone knows, excelling at a higher weight is more impressive for a freshman then excelling at a lower weight.
I don't really agree. A Frosh doing well at 182 is excellent, but the competition at 120 is far better than at 182 period. It's not even close. While everyeone mentioned is deserving of mention, I think Joey is number one, and Khalil is right there.

Have to agree. Will say this though....imho I think 120 and 138 were the two deepest weight classes in CT this year.
Tough call here, but I'm going with Bourjelli for Freshman of Year. Found the podium at NE's being the difference for me

LiCastri won the Eastern States and recovered from knee surgery 3 weeks ago to win the Ms with straight pins.
